Historical Perspective
The Shoppes at Red Hill were built in
the early 1900s and operated as a series of camping
cabins. During the roaring 20's, escaping the summer heat
by going north to New Hampshire was a popular get away. As illustrated
in the picture below, the early seven Red Hill Cabins included two octagon
shaped cabins and an eclectic collection of other architectures. The
business was originally called the Red Hill Camps of Center Harbor, New
Hampshire. Since then, the town boundaries have been redrawn and The
Shoppes are now located in Moultonborough.
Around the turn of the
century the business was called Red Hill Motel & Cabins and later Red
Hill Cottages LLC. The business was operated as a Motel, renting cabins
until July 2006 when it was purchased by Janet Cutler and Bill Page, the
current owners.
After many years experience in garden centers and craft
stores, Janet had the idea of converting the Red Hill Cabins to a series
of retail shops and that is how The Shoppes at Red Hill originated.
The Shoppes are being lovingly restored
by Bill, while preserving the original architecture and restoring the
natural setting. Two of the shoppe "cottages" have been restored and the
goal is to restore and refurbish all the shoppes while keeping in the
character of this historic sight.
The objective is to create a relaxed atmosphere where shopping is
recreation, very different from large shopping malls.
The Shoppes at Red Hill
The Shoppes at Red Hill are
now a unique set of five retails shoppes, each run by an independent
owner. This leads to a fun shopping experience as you browse from shop to shop
hunting for that unique special item. The Laker Magazine said "The fact that
each shop has a different decor and architectural style is part of what makes
the Shoppes at Red Hill so unique." |
